George Huntley
George Huntley was born in Vermont on 4 February 1831. A family genealogy printed in 1914 makes him the son of Selden Huntley and Dorothy Spiller, who lived at Chelsea and then Brookfield in Orange County. He was probably born in one of those towns. He was the fourth of eight children, and the 1900 census agrees on February 1831 in Vermont.
In April 1853 he married Mary Ann Roberts, a Cambria County girl born in 1830. How a young Vermont man came to Cambria County is not recorded. Their first child, Alma, was born on 27 February 1854. George named her for his sister Alma, who had died at home in Vermont on Christmas Day 1853, nine weeks before.
Seven more children followed over nineteen years. Sarah Ann was born in September 1855 and died the next August. Anna Cornelia, called Carrie, was born in May 1858 and Seldon, named for his own father, in December 1859. Marinda came in June 1862 and George W. in August 1864. Leonard A. was born in June 1871 and Charles in August 1873. Charles died the following June, and George W. died in September 1888 at twenty-four.
By 1860 the family was at Ebensburg, the county seat, with a John T. Roberts of nineteen living in the house. From the 1860s George kept the Ebensburg Hardware and House-Furnishing Store, and his advertisements ran in the Cambria Freeman for twenty years over the line GEO. HUNTLEY, Prop'r. In 1870 he was the only agent in the county for the Lima double-geared wood-sawing machine.
His two elder daughters were married from the house. Alma married William Roberts Smith there on 2 October 1879. Carrie married Samuel J. Humphrey on 8 August 1881. The Freeman called the first bride "eldest daughter of Mr. Geo. Huntley, of this place," and the second "Miss Carrie, second daughter of Geo. Huntley, Esq." Leonard married Elizabeth Jones in April 1890.
Mary Ann died on 14 July 1908, after fifty-five years of marriage. George lived on at Ebensburg for twelve more years. He died there on 8 January 1921, a month short of his ninetieth birthday. They lie in the Huntley plot at Lloyd Cemetery, beside a family monument carved HUNTLEY, each under a plain headstone of their own.
