Dr. Atherton Hall
Atherton Hall was born at Westminster, Vermont, on 29 October 1800. Westminster lies in the Connecticut River valley, and many of its families had come up from Cape Cod. The Vermont record of his birth names his parents as Atherton Hall and Olive. His father, Atherton Hall, had very probably been born at Yarmouth, on Cape Cod, in 1770. His mother was Olive Hallet. He was one of nine children of Atherton and Olive Hall at Westminster.
Atherton studied at the medical college at Castleton, Vermont, then called the Vermont Academy of Medicine. It was the first medical school in the state. He took his M.D. there in 1827, listed as "Atherton Hall, Jr." of Westminster.
On 1 January 1828 he married Mehitable Clark, also of Westminster, the daughter of Barnabas Clark and Hannah Gorham. He began the practice of medicine at Ludlow, Vermont. Their first two children were born there, George in 1829 and Caroline in 1830.
By 1832 the family had moved to Vergennes, on Otter Creek near Lake Champlain, where Henry, Edwin and Frances Delia were born. By 1841 they were at Whitehall, New York, at the southern tip of Lake Champlain, where John and Elizabeth were born. Three of their ten children died young: Harriet at not quite two, Frederic at eight and Sarah at fifteen.
Mehitable died on 1 February 1875. Dr. Hall died at Whitehall on 15 September 1881. His daughter Frances married Albert Moore Hoyt of Castleton, Vermont, the next town over the state line, in 1859, and their first child was born at Whitehall.
