Dr. James Huey Jr.
James Huey Jr. was born in Chester County, South Carolina, the eldest son of James Huey and his wife Sarah. His birth year is uncertain. His memorial gives 1791. A Huey family history of 1971 calls him a doctor of medicine and gives his birth as 17 June 1775.
He married Priscilla Franklin, a daughter of John Franklin of Chester County, about 1810. On 13 December 1811 her father made a deed of gift in her favor. It named her as the wife of James Huey Junior and settled an enslaved girl named Leaf on Priscilla and her children, with James to have the girl if Priscilla died childless.
Less than three weeks later, on 1 January 1812, his father set out from Chester County for Louisiana with the family. They reached Ouachita Parish in April 1812. James and Priscilla went with them and settled in Ouachita Parish. A family sketch says the old parish court records show him as a planter and a doctor.
His children are given as Jane, wife of William H. Bryan; Harriett, wife of Robert B. Brady; Winiford, born in 1820; Mason, born in 1826; James Franklin, born in 1831; Charles Mason, born in 1834; and Steven Franklin. Winiford married Hugh Hinton and lived in Lincoln Parish. Charles Mason Huey served in the 12th Louisiana Infantry and died at Vicksburg in 1863.
He died in Ouachita Parish on 27 December 1853 and was buried in Bryan Cemetery near West Monroe, where his father had been buried in 1839.
