Edward Dodge

Edward Dodge was born at Beverly in 1687, the son of Edward Dodge and grandson of Richard Dodge who came from East Coker in Somerset. On 14 March 1716/17 he married Abigail Haywood of Salem.

His father settled him early. A deed of 17 February 1714/5, recorded long afterwards in 1737, conveys from Edward Dodge Sen. to his two sons Edward and Mark, for love and affection, the dwelling house, the wash house down by the well, the barn, the cider house, mill and press, the outhousing and the land they stand on, together with two thirds of about forty acres of upland at Beverly. The remaining third went to their brother Jonathan. The same deed divides meadow lying part in Beverly and part in Wenham, meadow by Beaver Pond, and two parcels of salt marsh in Chebacco in Ipswich on the westerly side of Hogg Island River.

He died in March 1750/1. His will, dated 13 March and proved on 1 April, gave his wife half the estate outright, with the provision that if she married again she should have her dower instead. The remainder went to his son Nehemiah, then a minor. He names three daughters, Abigail, Ruth and Rebecca.

The inventory was taken by Elisha and Mark Dodge and Anthony Wood: the dwelling house at twenty pounds, the barn at eight, thirty three acres of homestead at one hundred and sixty five, six acres in Wenham at thirty, five acres in the Long Hill pasture at sixteen, half a right in the Beverly common land, eleven acres of woodland in Manchester, and two and a half acres of salt marsh at Ipswich. His widow made oath to it.
