Edward Heiberger
Edward Joseph Heiberger was born in Sandusky, Ohio, on 9 May 1882. His father, Henry Heiberger, was a laborer born in Pennsylvania to a family from Baden in Germany. His mother, Kate McNamara, was born at Buffalo, New York, the daughter of an Irishman.
In June 1900 Edward was eighteen, single, and living with his parents in the tenth ward of Sandusky. At home with him were his brother George, twenty, and his sisters Emma, sixteen, and Nettie, fourteen.
On 3 June 1902 he married Anna Everett, eighteen, of Sandusky, who had been born at Green Springs, Ohio. He was a laborer and only twenty, a year short of the age when a man could marry without his parents' leave. So his father wrote the consent on the license affidavit in the Erie County probate court: "I hereby consent to the marriage of my son Edward J. Heiberger to Anna Everett." The Rev. Claude Kelly, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sandusky, married them the same day.
Edward and Anna raised seven sons and two daughters in Sandusky: Myron, Maynard, Edward, Willard, Wilson, Kenneth and Melvin, and two girls, among them Mildred and Clara Catherine. In 1930 the family was in Sandusky, and in 1940 Edward and Anna were in the Portland Township part of the city with Maynard, Kenneth, Wilson and Melvin still at home. Edward's widowed mother, Catherine, spent her last years in his house at 708 Tyler Street and died there in January 1925.
Sandusky sits on a bay of Lake Erie and was a fishing port, and Edward worked as a fisherman. Anna died suddenly at home on 19 January 1948, the day after her sixty fourth birthday. Edward lived on at 708 Tyler Street for nine more years.
He fell ill early in 1957 and died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Sandusky on 21 February, after six weeks of illness, aged seventy four. His obituary called him a retired fisherman and a member of the Modern Woodmen, a fraternal insurance society. He left seven sons, two daughters, twenty five grandchildren, twenty eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Emma, then the wife of Perry Kehler of Cleveland. The Rev. Ray Evans held the service at the Charles J. Andres Sons' Funeral Home on 25 February. His seven sons, Myron, Maynard, Willard, Edward, Wilson, Kenneth and Melvin, carried him to his grave in Oakland Cemetery, where he lies beside Anna under one stone marked MOTHER and FATHER.
