Edwin Clement Varley

Edwin Clement Varley was born on 30 October 1893 in Waltham, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, the first child of Patrick Edward Varley, a barber on Main Street, and Mary Elizabeth Mitchell, who had married the year before. In 1900, aged 6, he was written down as Edward. His brothers and sisters were Arthur Paul, born 1896, Chester Joseph, called Chet, born 1898, Warren Francis, born 1901, Mary Patricia, born 1905, and Eugene. The family lived on Taylor Street and later at 156 Myrtle Street, and his father's shop moved up Moody Street as the years went on.

By 1917 he was living at Jamaica Plain in Boston, where he registered for the draft, and the city assessed him for tax that year. He went into the Army on 17 October 1917 and served through the First World War, to February 1919. His brother Chet served in the Marine Corps in the same war.

On 10 November 1925, at Newton, he married Margaret Eleanor Boughan, a painter's daughter from Watertown Street, Newton; the intention had been filed on 3 November. Their son Edwin Pierce was born at Brighton on 28 September 1927, and David A. and Pauline Frances followed. The family settled at 89 Taft Avenue at Point Shirley, the seaward end of Winthrop, in the parish of the Church of the Holy Rosary. His son remembered Point Shirley as the place he grew up.

Edwin died at Winthrop on 10 January 1966, aged 72. He is buried in Winthrop Cemetery, in Lot 1501 on Clover Path off Cross Street. Margaret joined him there in 1975. Their stone reads "VARLEY / EDWIN C. 1893 - 1966 / MARGARET E. 1897 - 1975."
