Elizabeth Case
Elizabeth Case was born about 1658, the eldest of the ten children of John Case and Sarah Spencer, probably at Windsor in Connecticut. Her mother was a daughter of William Spencer, one of the first settlers of Hartford. In the spring of 1669, when she was about eleven, the family moved up to Weatogue in Simsbury, where her father was made the town's first constable. Her mother died at Simsbury on 3 November 1691, aged fifty five, and her headstone is still there. Her father's will of 21 November 1700 left "to my daughter Elizabeth Tuller £10 more besides what she hath already received," and named her mother's brother, Samuel Spencer of Hartford, as "my brother" and an overseer.
On 30 April 1674 she married Joseph Lewis at Windsor. The Connecticut vital records enter them as "Joseph Leweis" and "Elizabeth Case." They lived at Simsbury, and they had three children: Joseph, born about 1676, John and Elizabeth.
Joseph Lewis was dead by September 1680, when the eldest child was about four. Her father and Samuel Willcoxson took the inventory, at 33 pounds 18 shillings. On 2 September 1680 the court gave "Adms. to Elizabeth Lewes, the Relict." A relict was a widow, and administration was the right and duty to settle the estate. The court added: "John Case is desired to assist the Widow."
She married again, to John Tuller of Simsbury. The estate was not closed until 1706. On 13 May that year what remained was valued at 24 pounds. On 13 November the court granted "John Tuller and Elizabeth his wife" a Quietus Est, the formal discharge of administrators who had finished their work. The Tullers then released her right of dower, the life interest a widow held in a third of her husband's land. The land was divided among "Joseph Lewis, John Lewis, and Elizabeth Smith, children of the sd. decd." Her brother Joseph Case of Simsbury acted as their attorney.
Her son Joseph had gone to Waterbury about 1700 as a cloth weaver. He became the deacon of its church and left the largest estate its probate court had yet seen. Her daughter Elizabeth married a Smith. When she died is not known.
