Mary Jones

Mother: William Jones Sr.
Children include Elizabeth

Mary Jones was a daughter of William Jones Sr., a planter of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and the wife of Capt. John Duvall, a son of the Huguenot Mareen Duvall. Her father made his will on 31 May 1705. Among its bequests it left personal goods to "daus. Mary, wife of John Duvall, Jane, wife of Neal Clarke, and Ann, dau. of Charles Cheeney, and granddau. Mary Duvall." Personal goods, or personalty, meant movable property rather than land.

The family histories give her a different name. J. D. Warfield in 1905 wrote that "Captain John Duvall, who held another large estate, married Elizabeth Jones, daughter of William Jones, Sr. of Anne Arundel County. She added considerably to his estate." Harry Wright Newman in 1933 also calls her Elizabeth Jones. Elizabeth was the name of her father's wife. The same will names a second daughter Mary, the wife of Anthony Buddingfield, so one of the two Marys may be written wrong. Her father's will does not say which of his daughters were his wife Elizabeth's.

Her daughter Elizabeth was born in 1687. Elizabeth married Benjamin Warfield in 1705, the year of the will, and later John Gaither of Abington. Her daughter Mary married Edward Gaither on 21 February 1709 and was buried at All Hallows on 25 September 1710. The "granddau. Mary Duvall" of the will of 1705 is probably this Mary. Her daughter Comfort was born on 17 March 1700 and married William Griffith of Frederick County.

She was living when her father made his will in May 1705. When she died is not known.
