Eva Ethny Reedy
Eva Ethny Reedy was born in Marshall County, in northeastern Kansas, on 24 June 1891. She was a daughter of William Reedy, an Iowa-born farmer, and Lillie Jewell, who was born in Kansas.
In 1900 she was nine, living at Waterville in Marshall County with her parents and eight brothers and sisters: Thomas, James, Lillie, Louise, Alice, Arman, Josie and Bertie. Within the next ten years the Reedys moved west to Paradise Township in Rooks County, close to the Saline River country of the Simpsons.
By 1909, before she was eighteen, she had married Perry Commodore Simpson, a farmer twelve years older, and went to live in the Saline River country of northern Ellis County. A portrait of the young couple survives: Eva stands beside Perry with her hair piled high, in a long white dress with a lace bodice and puffed sleeves.
She had seven children in thirteen years. Clarence Raymond, called Ray, was born in 1909, William Arvie in 1911, Lillie Ellen in 1914 and Charles Frank in 1915. Lester Allen came late in 1917, and that January a neighbor girl, Merle Brumitt, was "taking care of the new boy at Perry Simpson's." Julia Elvira followed in 1920 and Edward Leroy, called Buster, in 1922.
Eva died at Hays on 25 June 1922, the day after her thirty-first birthday. Her youngest child was a baby that year and her eldest was thirteen. She is buried at Norman Cemetery in Ellis County, and her small panel on the Simpson stone reads "Eva E. 1891 - 1922".
