Eva (Selzer) Cohen

Eva Selzer was born in Poland between about 1865 and 1871, the daughter of Morris Seltzer and Lena Kittay, spoke Yiddish, and married Joseph Cohen about 1885. She bore him at least six children.

Two were born before the family left: Lena in January 1886 and Jacob in November 1889. She crossed in 1890 with both of them, the younger a baby of a few months, and the family landed at Castle Garden two years before Ellis Island opened. Jennie followed in 1893, Philip in 1899 and Isidore in 1901, all three at 452 West 38th Street in Manhattan.

When the census taker asked her in June 1900 how many children she had borne and how many were still living, she answered five and four. The four are named on the sheet under her. The fifth is not named anywhere and had died by January 1899.

Her maiden name is written Seltzer, Selzer and Zelter on her children's documents, the last on Philip's marriage certificate. She was widowed on 22 January 1930, in the house on South 4th Street, and it was she who reported her husband's death and named his parents. By April that year she was living with her youngest son Isidore, who was single and took her in.

She died on 22 September 1934 and was buried the next day at Mount Judah Cemetery, in the same society plot as Joseph, a few rows away.
