Rose Jacoba Van Tuinen
Rose Jacoba Van Tuinen was born at Grand Rapids on 22 November 1893, the second of the nine children of Johannes Jacobus Van Tuinen, called John, and Folkelina van Houten, called Lena. Her father had been a schoolmaster at Ee in Friesland before his family emigrated in 1881; her mother was Grand Rapids born, the daughter of immigrants from Goedereede and Groningen. Her name joined her two grandmothers' lines: Rose for Roelfke Oosterhuis, her mother's mother, and Jacoba for Jacob Wessels van Tuinen, her father's father. Her brothers and sisters were Gertie (1890-1989), who married John Oosterhouse, Cora (1896-1916), Jacob (1901-1985), Louise (1903-1992), Agnes (1905-1998), Peter (1909-2002), who became a minister, William (1913-2008) and Wesley Arthur (1915-2011).
In 1918 she married John Lambert Tiemeyer, a Veendam-born farmer's son four years her junior. They lived at Cutlerville, where he managed the hospital farm, and raised seven children: Lena Frances, Marie Agnes, Johanna Tena, John Wesley, Gertrude Nella, Peter William and Jack Lambertus. When her father died in December 1929 the family notice listed "Mr. en Mrs. John L. Tiemeyer" among the mourners.
John died in August 1970. Rose lived ten more years and died at Grandville on 7 July 1980, aged eighty-six. She is buried beside him in Blain Cemetery at Cutlerville, under the stone that reads ROSE J. TIEMEYER 1893-1980.
