Frances Vanover
Frances Vanover, called Frankie, was born in Virginia about 1872, the daughter of John R. Vanover and Margaret Mullins. On 17 June 1889, aged seventeen, she married John Baker in Dickenson County. He was eighteen, a Kentucky-born son of Samuel Baker.
In June 1900 she was Francis Baker, 25, keeping house in Clintwood town with John and five children, the eldest eleven and the youngest a baby. Her daughter Margaret was born at Clintwood on 6 May 1899, and her son Elbert on 7 October 1907. She bore at least nine children: Sarah C., Joseph R., Flory J., Tildy, Margaret, Elbert, William Brice, Cally and Vickuna.
In 1917 Margaret married Meredith Reed, and the clerk entered the bride's mother as Frankie Baker. The Reeds went over Pine Mountain to the coal camp at Burdine in Letcher County, Kentucky. By 1925 Frankie was at Burdine too, and she died there on 12 August 1925. She was buried beside her husband John in the Shelby Gap Cemetery at Shelbiana, in Pike County. Her death record gives her parents as John R. Vanover and Margret Mullins. Her children's death certificates, in Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, all name their mother Frankie Vanover.
