Françoise Burgy
Françoise Burgy was born at Logelheim, a village of the Haut-Rhin southeast of Colmar, near Neuf-Brisach, on 2 ventôse of the year VIII of the French Republic, which was 21 February 1800. Her parents were Pierre Burgy and Marie Anne Lolle. Her father died at Logelheim on 27 March 1814, when she was fourteen.
She worked as a day laborer. On 5 October 1826, at twenty-six, she married Jean Michel Hutzler before the mayor of Oberentzen, a village a few miles to the south. The banns were read at Oberentzen, at Logelheim and at Oberhergheim. Her widowed mother came from Logelheim and gave her consent, and like her new mother-in-law, Anne Laur, she could not write and made her mark.
Over the next fifteen years Françoise bore seven children at Oberentzen, the youngest Martin in November 1841.
In 1852 the family emigrated to the Alsatian colony at Castroville, Texas, and in 1860 she was living in Castroville town with her husband and Martin. Her husband died in 1865. When she died is not known.
