Frank Sekavec
Frank Sekavec, Frantisek at his baptism, was born in 1842 in Bohemia, the eldest son of Jan Sekavec and Anna Vosecky. His mother was from Dobrichov and his brother Joseph was born at Kourim, both in the Kolin district east of Prague. The family was still in Bohemia in 1857. They crossed in 1866, three boys and a baby girl, and went straight to Blue Earth County in southern Minnesota, where other families from the same corner of Bohemia, the Zajics among them, were taking up land.
A family history compiled by a descendant says Frank married first about 1868 in Minnesota, at about eighteen, a Bohemian-born woman named Antonia whose surname is lost, and had at least four children by her. His son Cenek was born in Blue Earth County in January 1876. By 1880 the family had moved to the new Czech colony at Holyrood in Ellsworth County, Kansas, with Frank's parents and brothers, and Frank had married again: Anna Krchmar, born at Prague in 1864, fifteen to his thirty-one. Fourteen children came of the second marriage, so that Frank, the history says, "sired around 20 children". In June 1880 the census taker for Valley Township, Ellsworth County, wrote the family down as Lekavec: Frank, 31, farmer, born in Bohemia of Bohemian parents; his wife Annie, 15; and four children, Sophie, 11, Cenek, 5, and Annie, 3, all born in Minnesota, and John, one, born in Kansas. Sophie and Cenek were born years before Anna could have been their mother, so they were the first wife's; the census does not say so, but the ages do. John was born at Holyrood in 1879, Olga in 1882, Karel in 1888, Frank in 1894, Sylvia in 1896.
In 1893 the Sekavecs moved to the Oklahoma Territory and settled in the Prague community near Keokuk Falls in Pottawatomie County. By 1898 they were in Shawnee, at 816 North Philadelphia, and stayed about thirty years; Milos was born there in 1900 and Paul in 1906. In old age Frank went south to Mount Ida in the Arkansas mountains, where his sons Karel and Milos had settled. He died there on 10 April 1926, aged about 84, and was buried in Stanley-Standridge Cemetery. Anna outlived him by fifteen years and died at Columbus, Ohio.
