Karel Sekavec
Karel Sekavec, Charles in English, was born on 3 April 1888, a son of Frank Sekavec, a Bohemian immigrant, and his young second wife Anna Krchmar. His stone gives the year as 1889; the Social Security record gives 1888. He was born, in all likelihood, at the Czech settlement of Holyrood in Ellsworth County, Kansas, where his sister Olga had been born in 1882 and where the family lived until 1893. That year the Sekavecs moved to the Oklahoma Territory, to the Prague community near Keokuk Falls in Pottawatomie County, and by 1898 to Shawnee, where Frank kept the house at 816 North Philadelphia for thirty years. Karel was one of fourteen children of the second marriage, and of about twenty altogether; his brothers Cenek, John, Frank, Milos and Paul and his sisters Olga and Sylvia are buried across four states.
In the First World War he served as a private first class in the 13th Company of the 162nd Depot Brigade, an Arkansas unit, which suggests he had already gone to Arkansas by 1917. He married Dicie Avilla Standridge of Mount Ida, Montgomery County, born 1898, whose family had been in those mountains since before the Civil War. Their children were Guy, born 1926, Deane, and Evelyn; a Coleen Joy Sekavec who died in Montgomery County on 8 November 1928 was probably theirs. In 1930 the family was at South Fork, Montgomery County.
His father died at Mount Ida in 1926 and his brother Milos settled there too, working for the Forest Service. Karel died on 6 April 1963, three days after his 75th birthday; the Arkansas Gazette carried the notice the next day under the name Charley Sekavec. He is buried in Stanley-Standridge Cemetery at Mount Ida under a military marker. Dicie survived him by 22 years.
