Born 1791, Graceham, Frederick County, Maryland
Died 1865
Father: George Harbaugh
Children include Smiley

Frederick Harbaugh was born on 18 February 1791 at Graceham, the Moravian settlement in Frederick County, Maryland. He was the youngest child of George Harbaugh and his second wife, Marie Barbara. The Graceham church book recorded his birth, and his own family Bible gives the same day.

His father took the family over the mountains to Bedford County, Pennsylvania, and in 1803 on into Ohio. They settled in Dover Township, Tuscarawas County, on the west side of the Tuscarawas River. Frederick was twelve. The Harbaughs were already settled on that ground when Jesse Slingluff and Christian Deardorff, who laid out the town of Dover, arrived. Frederick bought land of his own in the township and stayed in it for the rest of his life. He is in Dover Township in every census from 1820 to 1860.

In the War of 1812 he served in Captain David Kasebeer's company of Colonel Robert Bay's 3rd Regiment of Ohio militia.

On 3 October 1815 he married Rhoda Smiley in Tuscarawas County. She was born on 7 June 1791 in Pennsylvania, so they were the same age. Their first child came ten months later, on 28 July 1816, and they named him Smiley, for her family. Nine more children followed over the next eighteen years: Sarah in 1818, John in 1820, Josiah Foster in 1822, Jemima in 1824, Mary Jane in 1826, Anne Eliza in 1828, Elizabeth in 1830, Isaac in 1832 and Frederick in 1834.

He was a farmer, and from 1832 to 1838 he was a justice of the peace at Crooked Run in Tuscarawas County. An Ohio justice of the peace was elected by his township. He heard small debts and minor offenses and married couples, and in a rural township he was the nearest thing to a court. The county taxed him at Canal Dover in 1829, 1830 and 1838.

He died on 18 July 1865, aged seventy four. Rhoda died nine months later. They are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Tuscarawas County, under two plain marble stones that have since come off their bases.
