George Harbaugh
George Harbaugh was born on 11 August 1747, the eldest son of George Harbaugh and Catharina Williard. He grew up in Harbaugh Valley, the narrow valley in the mountains of northern Frederick County, Maryland, where his father had taken the family about 1760. The family belonged to the Moravian congregation at Graceham, and its church book is where nearly every date in his life was written down.
On 27 November 1770 he married Elizabeth Binkele, who was born on 19 December 1749. They had George in 1771, Jacob in 1773, Elizabeth in 1775 and John in 1778. On 10 January 1780 Elizabeth gave birth to a daughter who died the same day. Thirteen days later Elizabeth died too.
He married again, to a woman the church book calls Marie Barbara. With her he had Anna Marie in 1782, Benjamin in 1783, Daniel in 1785, a Marie Barbara who was born in January 1787 and died in February 1789, and Frederick on 18 February 1791.
He lived for a time on the old homestead in the valley and then moved to Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Deeds in Bedford County and in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, show him and his eldest son George living together most of the time, and in 1803 he took the family on into Dover Township, Tuscarawas County, with Frederick, then twelve. Rev. Henry Harbaugh, writing the family's history in 1856, had heard that "coming to the Valley on a visit, he took sick and died on his way home." The year is not known.
