Frederick Terriberry
Frederick Terriberry was born in Morris County, New Jersey, on 14 June 1810. His name was spelled Terryberry, Teraberry and Terraberry as often as Terriberry. A genealogy of the old German families of the region, published in 1895, makes him a son of Jacob Terryberry and Rachel Fritts, who lived at Spruce Run in Hunterdon County. Through his father he descended from Stephen Terryberry, a Palatine German who landed at Philadelphia in 1738 and settled in German Valley.
He grew up in that German country of northwest New Jersey and joined the German Reformed church as a young man. On 20 February 1834 he married Elizabeth Lindaberry. She came from another of the valley's German families, a daughter of John Lindaberry and Betsey Rodenbaugh.
They farmed near Clinton, in Hunterdon County, and raised a large family there. Eleven children were born to them, six sons and five daughters. Their son Jacob was born near Clinton on 27 October 1844, and their son Joseph Frederick was born at Clinton on 1 July 1857. His whole working life, a county history says, was given to farming.
In the spring of 1867 Frederick, then fifty-six, took the family west to Bureau County, Illinois. They settled at Princeton, the county seat, and there he joined the Presbyterian church, of which he stayed a member for the rest of his life. Joseph finished the Princeton high school in 1875 and went east to study medicine.
From Illinois the family moved on to Poweshiek County, Iowa, to a farm three miles west of the village of Malcom. The county history dates the move to 1872; his obituary says 1879. Elizabeth died on 25 September 1879, and she was buried at Princeton, Illinois. Frederick kept the farm near Malcom until 1 September 1891. Then he moved into Grinnell and made his home with his daughter Rachel.
He lived in Grinnell for the last eleven years of his life, through a long illness at the end. He died there on 12 June 1902, two days before his ninety-second birthday. The funeral was held at the house on a Sunday afternoon, conducted by Professor Parker. His body was taken back to Princeton, Illinois, and buried beside his wife. Eight of his eleven children and three of his sisters outlived him.
In 1911 his surviving children were spread from Iowa to New Jersey. Nathan S. lived at High Bridge, New Jersey. John lived at Montezuma, Iowa, and Jacob farmed in Sheridan township near Malcom. Sarah E. was the wife of J. S. Hulsizer of Trenton. Rachel was in Grinnell. Mary J. was the wife of Austin Cramer, near Annandale, New Jersey. Joseph Frederick was a neurologist in New York City, and Carrie V. was the wife of C. W. Lee of Clinton, New Jersey.
