Jacob Terryberry was born in 1786, a son of Philip Terryberry and Mary Ann Hann. His father inherited land on Schooley's Mountain, in Morris County, New Jersey, and the family was part of the German settlement that had grown up in German Valley since the 1730s. His great-grandfather Stephen Terryberry had come over from Rotterdam in 1738.

On 15 December 1810 Jacob married Rachel Fritts, a daughter of Frederick Fritts Jr. and Rachel Steinmets, born on 24 January 1791. They lived at Spruce Run, in Hunterdon County. A genealogy of the region's German families, published in 1895, names six of their children: Nathan, who married Peggy Stires; Frederick, who married Eliza Linaberry; Philip, who married a Castner; William, who married a Martenis; Mary Ann, who married Morris Martenis; and Elisabeth, who married Jacob Flumervelt.

Their son Frederick went west in 1867 and died at Grinnell, Iowa, in 1902. Frederick's son Joseph Frederick Terriberry became a New York neurologist.

Jacob died in 1868.
