Joseph Frederick Terriberry was born at Clinton, in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on 1 July 1857, the son of Frederick Terriberry and Elizabeth Lindaberry. A biography of him printed in the National Cyclopaedia of American Biography traces the family to an immigrant named Stephen Durrenberg, whose name became Terriberry in America.

He was one of the eleven children of a farming family near Clinton. In the spring of 1867, when he was nine, his parents moved from New Jersey to Bureau County, Illinois, and settled at Princeton, the county seat. He went to school there and finished the Princeton high school in 1875. His parents moved on again, to a farm near Malcom in Poweshiek County, Iowa. His mother died in 1879, and his father died at Grinnell in 1902, aged ninety-one. In 1911 a county history of Poweshiek listed him among the eight surviving children as "Dr. J. F., a physician of New York city."

He went east to study medicine at Bellevue Hospital Medical College in New York and took his degree in 1880. He served as an interne at City Hospital, then called Charity Hospital, from October 1880 to April 1882, and afterwards at the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled. He made his specialty the diseases of the mind and the nervous system, and for the rest of his career he was a New York neurologist. He was neurologist to the out-patients of a New York hospital through the 1890s and 1900s, consulting neurologist to the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and to the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled, and later neurologist to the Port Chester General Hospital. He was elected a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine in 1897 and belonged to the New York Neurological Society, where between 1897 and 1909 he regularly showed patients and spoke in the discussions, on poliomyelitis in children, a brain tuberculoma and lead poisoning among other cases. He was treasurer and then vice-president of the alumni society of City Hospital from 1902 to 1904.

In October 1896 he gave a statement as an expert on nervous diseases in the case of People against George Appo, a New York pickpocket whose life the historian Timothy Gilfoyle later wrote.

He married Margaret Isabella Haddock. They had two daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth, both raised in Manhattan; Elizabeth was born on 31 August 1895. About 1890 the doctor lived at 103 West Seventy-third Street, and by 1902 at 120 West Seventy-third Street, which stayed the family's house through the girls' youth. He kept a summer home at Canaan, in the northwest corner of Connecticut near the Berkshires. Both daughters went to Barnard College, and both were married at home on West Seventy-third Street in 1920: Margaret to Walter Grant Thomas of Wollaston, Massachusetts, on 29 January, and Elizabeth to Reynold Barlow Hoyt, son of a New York leather merchant, on 18 November.

In 1924 he and his wife were still registered to vote from the house on West Seventy-third Street. He died at his summer home in Canaan on 28 July 1932, aged 75. The Journal of the American Medical Association recorded his death that September, and the New York Academy of Medicine noted it in its Bulletin.
