Freelan Ganaway Keele was born on 17 April 1897 at Burnet, Texas. His father, Finis Richmond Keele, was a grocer and a preacher of the Church of Christ in Burnet County, and his mother was Nancy Ella Howell. He was the only son among three children. His sisters were Pansie Maude Keele, born in 1894, and Bettye Annie Keele, born in 1899.

In about 1906 the family left Burnet County for Schleicher County, on the dry divide country of West Texas, where his father farmed and ranched near Eldorado. Freelan grew up there. His mother died at Eldorado in April 1926.

He married Lillian Emma Nisbett, a carpenter's daughter born at Eastland in 1901. They had four sons: Raymond Theodore, Burle Ennis, Finis Richmond, named for his grandfather, and Eddie Glenn, born in November 1931. Eddie was born in November 1931 at San Angelo while the family's mail came by a star route out of Robert Lee, in Coke County, and Freelan gave his work then as ranching. In 1935 they were living in the country in Ector County. By 1940 they had settled near Eola in Concho County, where the census found the four boys at home, from Raymond at 13 down to Eddie at 8. Eddie graduated from the Eola high school.

A short life sketch written by a descendant says he was a farmer all his life and that, as a member of the Church of Christ, he preached the gospel on occasion, as his father had done. By 1970 he had lived in Concho County for 36 years, on a farm four miles southwest of Eola. He died on 11 June 1970, aged 73, at a house two miles northwest of Vick, in the same precinct. The justice of the peace at Eden, M. E. Jones, held an inquest and gave the cause as heart failure from hardening of the arteries. His son Raymond gave the particulars for the certificate. He was buried on 13 June in Eola Cemetery, under a double stone with Lillian, who outlived him by thirteen years.
