Gene Golden was born at Blue Ridge in Fannin County, Georgia on 20 September 1930, a son of Joseph Lahua Golden and Minnie Jane Tipton. Fannin County is the top corner of Georgia, in the Blue Ridge proper.
He did not grow up there. Between 1933 and 1936 his parents took the family north to the Huntington district of West Virginia, and his younger brother and sister were born there. By 1950 his parents had separated, his mother was working as a hospital laundress at Huntington, and Gene, at nineteen, was not in either household. He served in the Air Force in the Korean War, worked as a carpenter until he retired, and belonged to Patriot Masonic Lodge number 496.
He married Elva Jean Dailey on 5 March 1955. Their eldest, Teresa, was born within the year, in Chicago. The family settled at Gallipolis in Gallia County, Ohio, on the Ohio River, and in 1974 his daughter married a Fetty at Cheshire, eleven miles down the same bank.
He died at his home in Gallipolis on 21 September 2009, the day after his seventy ninth birthday, and is buried at Centenary Cemetery.
