Mary Ellen Osman
Mary Ellen Osman was born on 28 January 1838 in Adams County, Ohio. Her parents were Jabez Daily Osman and Mariah Grooms, who farmed on Gift Ridge in Monroe Township and had eleven children. Her death certificate names them as Jabes Osman and Maria Grooms. Her younger brothers and sisters included William Jabez, Samantha, Harriett, Alice Keziah, Adeline, Hamer and Dyre.
On 17 March 1855, at seventeen, she married Daniel Bayless, a farmer of the West Union neighborhood who was ten years older. They had ten children. Three daughters died before their father. The seven sons were William, George Coleman, Frank, Charley, Clarence, Milton and Vivian. In 1864 Daniel went to the Civil War with the 182nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and came home with an illness that stayed with him for the rest of his life.
When her father died on Gift Ridge in January 1912, at ninety-four, the paper listed her first among his surviving children, as Mrs. Daniel Bayless of West Union. Daniel died at home in September 1918, and his obituary noted that she survived him.
Mary Ellen died at West Union on 8 January 1920, twenty days before her eighty-second birthday, and was buried there on 11 January. No stone for her has been found in West Union Cemetery. When her son George died in 1944, his death certificate gave his mother's maiden name as Mary Ellen Osman.
