Mary Frances Adams
Mary Frances Adams was born at Troutville, Botetourt County, Virginia, on 29 April 1918, the second of the three children of George Henry Adams and Mae Amanda Secrist. Her sister Ruth was a year older and her brother Harvey Roland four years younger. She grew up in the Amsterdam district of Botetourt, the farm country around Troutville north of Roanoke. In 1930, at eleven, she was at home there with her parents, Ruth and Harvey, and in 1940, at 21, she was still at home with her parents and Harvey. A studio portrait from about those years shows a young woman with her dark hair rolled and curled, in a jacket over a white open collar.
On 16 April 1948 she married Price John Burger at Roanoke. She was 29 and he was 31, a divorced man with two children, Jean and Roger. Their daughter Carolyn Sue was born in 1950. They lived on Route 1, Troutville, close to her parents, and when her father died in 1959 and her mother in 1961 the notices named her as Mrs. Frances A. Burger and Mrs. Frances Burger of Troutville.
In April 1967 she and Price were photographed together in front of a brick house. Price died at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Roanoke on 16 April 1967, their nineteenth wedding anniversary. She was 48. She never remarried.
Frances worked for Tultex, the Virginia maker of sweatshirts and fleece, and retired from there. She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church. A later studio portrait shows her with white curled hair and large glasses, in a paisley dress with a lace collar.
Mary Frances Adams Burger died on Saturday, 16 November 2002, at 84, of Troutville. Her obituary in the Roanoke Times named her survivors as her daughter, Carolyn S. Wiley of Troutville; her stepson Roger Burger; her stepdaughter Jane Reed; her grandchildren John and Amy Wiley of Troutville and Sonia Wiley of Roanoke; several stepgrandchildren; and her brother Harvey Adams and his wife Bea of Roanoke. Roger McKinney held the funeral at Oakey's East Chapel on 19 November, and she was buried beside Price in Hill Crest Cemetery. Her stone reads MARY A. BURGER, APR. 29, 1918, NOV. 16, 2002.
