Gladys Slanczka
Gladys Ione Bartlebaugh was born at Burnside, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, on 19 June 1922. Her parents were Curt E. Bartlebaugh, a coal miner and First World War veteran, and Mina Vay Fetterman. She was their third child. Her sister Alice was born and died in 1918, and her brother Theodore was born in 1920. From 1929 the family lived at Commodore in Indiana County.
She married John Stanley Slanczka of Clymer, and they settled at Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio. On 3 April 1950 the census found them there with their son John C., aged 2. Their daughter Louise was born that month, and Connie and Brenda followed.
When her mother died in 1963, the Indiana Evening Gazette listed among the survivors "one daughter, Mrs. John (Gladys) Slanczka of Elyria, O." By the time her father died on Christmas Day 1974 she was his only surviving child.
John died in 1983. Gladys lived on in Elyria for more than twenty years and died there on 9 March 2006, aged 83. Her death was noticed in the Elyria Chronicle Telegram and the Lorain Journal on 10 March 2006. She was buried beside John at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon, under one bronze marker that reads GLADYS I. 1922 2006 and TOGETHER FOREVER.
