Harold Leitch McLurg was born on 3 October 1895 in Lobo Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, west of London. He was a twin. His sister Hazel was born the same day. Their parents were William McLurg, a farmer of the Carlisle and Lobo country, and Jennet or Janet Leitch, who had married him at Carlisle in February 1873. The twins were the youngest of a large family. Their brother John was born in 1875, their sister Ethel in 1876 and their sister Mabel Ada in 1884.

Janet Leitch McLurg died on 7 February 1896, four months after the twins were born. She was about forty five. Hazel stayed with her father. Harold went to his father's brother, Dr. John McLurg, a physician in Bay City, Michigan, and his wife Charlotte. They had been married eleven years and had no children of their own.

The 1900 census found him there. In the ninth ward of Bay City lived John McLurg, physician, 48, his wife Charlotte, and Harold S., born October 1895 in English Canada, entered as "adopted son". The same page notes that Charlotte had borne no children. Harold had come into the United States in 1897. He kept his mother's maiden name, Leitch, as his middle name.

His burial memorial says he served in the First World War with the United States Army Ambulance Corps in France. On 12 October 1921, at twenty six, he married Lillian Wylie at Saginaw. She was twenty four, born in Ohio, the daughter of James T. Wylie and Agnes Batchelor. On the marriage record his parents are J. McLurg and Charlotte J. Steward, the uncle and aunt who raised him.

Harold and Lillian settled in Saginaw. Their daughters were Marcia, born 14 June 1924, and Marilyn, born 2 March 1929. In 1940 the family lived in the eighteenth ward of Saginaw, in the same house as in 1935. Harold was forty four. His memorial says he was director of the Saginaw chapter of the Red Cross from 1940 to 1948. In 1942 he registered for the wartime draft as Harold Leitch McLurg, born 3 October 1895. In 1950 he and Lillian were living alone in Saginaw.

Harold L. McLurg died in Saginaw on 5 January 1969, aged seventy three. He was buried at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Bay City, the town where he grew up, near Dr. John McLurg and Charlotte.
