William McLurg
William McLurg was born in Ontario about 1849 or 1850, a son of John McLurg, a native of Belfast, Ireland, and Isabella Marshall. He grew up in the Irish and Scottish farming country of Middlesex County, west of London, among a large family of brothers and sisters. Henry was born in 1853, John, later a physician, in 1857, Letitia about 1858, Mary about 1860 and Arthur about 1862.
On 20 February 1873 he married Janet Leitch at Carlisle, in East Williams Township. The marriage was registered with his parents as John McLurg and Isabella Marshall. Janet had been born in East Williams about 1851. Their children included John, born 13 June 1875, Ethel, born 14 December 1876, and Mabel Ada, born 10 December 1884 in Lobo Township.
On 3 October 1895, in Lobo, Janet bore twins, Harold and Hazel. She died four months later, on 7 February 1896, and was buried at the Carlisle cemetery. William kept Hazel. The boy, Harold, was taken by William's brother Dr. John McLurg and his wife Charlotte, a childless couple in Bay City, Michigan, who raised him as their own.
William married again. In 1901 he was living in Middlesex County with a second wife, Martha, born in Nova Scotia in 1866, and with his children John, Ethel, Mabel and Hazel. William McLurg died on 2 September 1918 and was buried at the Carlisle-Carlyle-Falkirk Cemetery, where his parents and his first wife lay.
