Harry Russell Lovell
Harry Russell Lovell was born on 12 September 1895 at Ipava, a farm village in the southwest corner of Fulton County, Illinois. He was the son of S. Douglas Lovell and his wife Lina, both Illinois-born and both about forty when he arrived. In 1910 he was fourteen and living with them and his sister Mamie, 19, in New Salem Township, McDonough County, just across the county line from Ipava.
He registered for the First World War draft in McDonough County, giving his birth date and Ipava as his birthplace. On 15 October 1916 he had married Naomi Evelyn Kerr, the daughter of James T. Kerr, a minister of the United Brethren church. Their wedding date is carved in a pair of linked rings between their names on the stone they share at Ipava.
Harry and Naomi had fourteen children. Delmar Wayne came first, in 1918, and Steve last, in 1942. The births follow the family around the district: Darrell at Ipava in 1923, Patricia at Macomb in 1929, William at Bushnell in 1932, Carl at Bushnell in 1937. In 1933 the family was out at Adair, or at Baylis, by the two notices of Naomi's father's death. By 1942 they were settled in Bushnell.
In April 1942 Harry, then forty-six, registered again, in the so-called old man's draft. This was the fourth wartime registration, which enrolled men aged 45 to 64 who were too old to be called up but could be put to war work. He gave his home as Bushnell and named himself as his own employer. In the 1950 census he was fifty-four and assembled machines for a farm-machinery maker, with five of the children still at home.
Naomi died in July 1961. Harry died on 18 June 1963. His death was registered in Bradford County, Florida, and he was brought home to Ipava Cemetery and buried beside her. Several of his sons served in uniform: Delmar in the Marine Corps and Darrell in the Air Force in the Second World War, Carl in the Army, and William for thirty-one years before he retired in 1990.
