Hazel Obin
Hazel L. Obin was born on 6 May 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were Joseph Arthur Obin, a Hyde Park man who went by Arthur, and Mary Dora Lamore of Hanover, in Plymouth County. Her parents were first cousins. Her father's father, Edward J. Obin, and her mother's mother, Mary Louise Obin, were brother and sister, the children of John Obin and Pauline Dacelier, who came down from Canada in 1889. Her mother's family worked in the box factories of Pembroke.
She was the fifth of six children in the house when the census taker came in April 1950. The family was then living in Pembroke, Plymouth County, about twenty miles south of Boston. Her father, 44, was a wooden box maker in a wood box factory and had worked 48 hours the week before. Her mother, 36, kept house. With them were Hazel's brothers Joseph Arthur Jr., 15, William F., 12, Robert L., 8, and Francis R., 3, and her sister Rita M., 10. Hazel was 6. A brother, John E. Obin, is named in later family obituaries but was not in the house that spring. Next door, in the neighbouring house on the enumerator's route, lived Mary Lamore, a widow of 70 born in French Canada.
Hazel married Robert Kahler. They had three sons: Robert, Fred, who was born at Weymouth in 1967, and John, who died before his mother. In later life Hazel lived in Plymouth, from about 1989, and from 1997 in Wareham, at the head of Buzzards Bay.
Her brothers and sister went their own ways. Joseph Arthur Jr. became a weapons safety officer and died at Ogden, Utah, in May 2009. Francis, the youngest, served in the Army during the Vietnam War, worked at the Kingston foundry and later ran maintenance at Blue Cross Blue Shield; he died at Plymouth in June 2009, and his obituary listed Hazel Kahler of Wareham among his survivors. William died in 2001. Robert L. Obin died at East Wareham in October 2011. Rita, Mrs. Turner, died before Hazel.
Hazel L. Kahler died on 12 April 2020 at the Tremont Healthcare Center in Wareham, after a long illness. She was 76. Her husband had died before her. Her obituary named her sons Robert and Fred and the late John, four grandchildren, and her late sister Rita Turner. Services were private, and the arrangements were made by the Wareham Village Funeral Home.
