Mary Dora Lamore

Mary Dora Lamore was born on 4 July 1913 at Hanover, in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Her birth was recorded as Mary Dora Lemore. Her parents were Charles Lamore and Mary Louise Obin, both born in Canada and both French speakers. She was called Dora as a child, and her Social Security application gives her name as Dora Mary Obin.

In January 1920 the family was renting a house in Pembroke, the next town south. Her father, 39, had come from Canada in 1896 and worked as a labourer in a box factory. Her mother, 36, had come in 1889 and could neither read nor write. Dora, 6, was the second of four Lamore children in the house, with Wilfred, 10, Lawrence, 4, and Rosamond, 3. Also there were her half-sister Mary L. Obin, 17, and her mother's parents, John Obin, 72, who also worked in a box factory, and Pauline Obin, 63. French was the mother tongue of every adult in the house.

About 1933 she married Joseph Arthur Obin of Hyde Park. He was her first cousin, the son of her mother's brother Edward. Their children were Joseph Arthur Jr., born at North Pembroke in 1934, William F. in 1937, Rita M. about 1940, Robert L. in 1941, Hazel L. in 1943 and Francis R. in 1947, and John E.

In 1940 the family was in Boston. By 1950 they were back in Pembroke. In April of that year Dora was 36 and keeping house for her husband, a wooden box maker, and all six children. Next door lived Mary Lamore, 70, a widow born in French Canada. She applied for a Social Security card in February 1950, giving her home as Plymouth County.

Her husband died in 1973. Mary Dora Obin died on 24 March 2001. Her son William died four months later, in July 2001.
