Agnes Batchelor
Agnes Hardie Batchelor was born on 5 October 1867 in Port Huron Township, St. Clair County, Michigan. Her parents were Henry Augustus Batchelor, a lumberman born in Michigan, and Agnes Hardie, the daughter of a Scottish family. She was their eldest child and carried her mother's full name. Her brothers and sisters were Jacob Frederick, Ella Murdock, Alice, Henry Augustus Jr. and Margaret.
The family moved from Port Huron to Saginaw in the 1870s. On 18 December 1890, aged twenty three, Agnes married James Thompson Wylie at Saginaw. He was twenty eight, born at Athens, Pennsylvania, and raised at Perry, New York. Their daughter Lillian B. Wylie was born in Canton, Stark County, Ohio, on 7 March 1897. By 1910 they were living in Saginaw again.
In Saginaw she gave her time to the Home for the Friendless, a home founded by the women of the city in 1870 for infants and children who had lost their parents or whose parents could not keep them while they worked. It stood at Howard and McCoskry Streets and took in eighty to a hundred children a year. In 1918 Mrs. James T. Wylie was its vice-president.
Her father died in August 1912 and her mother in October of the same year. In 1921 her daughter Lillian married Harold L. McLurg at Saginaw.
In July 1923 Agnes and James applied for passports for a six month tour of Great Britain and France, sailing on the Leviathan. On her application she described herself as a housewife and signed it "Agnes Batchelor Wylie".
Agnes was widowed in April 1938. She died on 3 August 1956, aged eighty eight, and is buried with James at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Saginaw. Her flat stone reads "AGNES BATCHELOR WYLIE / OCTOBER 5 1867 / AUGUST 3 1956". It stands by a columned family monument carved WYLIE and BATCHELOR, in the same cemetery as her parents' stones. Her father, Henry A. Batchelor, was one of the original stockholders of the People's Savings Bank of Saginaw.
