Henry Heinlein was born on 2 September 1856 in Monroe County, Ohio, the son of John Heinlein. He farmed all his working life.

He married twice. His first wife, Ellen Haythorn, married him on 26 March 1879. They had five children: Maggie in 1881, Bertha in 1882, Joseph in 1884, John Otto in 1886 and Leota, who was born and died in 1889. Ellen died in 1889.

On 12 July 1891 Henry married Hannah Jane Allen, also of Monroe County. They had three children: Cecille Etna in 1894, Charles Loriston at Trail Run on 12 June 1897, and Lelah DeEtta in 1903. A studio photograph of this family survives from about 1906. Henry stands at the back with a heavy moustache and a watch chain across his vest, one hand on Hannah's shoulder. Hannah sits in a wicker chair. Cecille, Charles and little Lelah stand around them. It is the only known photograph of Hannah.

The family moved to Huntington, Indiana, and Henry spent several years there. He was a member of the Church of God. Hannah died at Huntington on 9 August 1923, aged 58. Their daughter Lelah died the next year.

About 1925 Henry went to Warren, Ohio, where several of his older children lived. His son John was a sergeant in the Warren police. Henry lived at 910 Swallow Street SW. A portrait of him in old age shows a white-haired man in round wire glasses and a tweed jacket.

He died of complications at St. Joseph's Hospital in Warren at ten in the morning on 6 August 1937, aged 80. The Warren Tribune Chronicle called him a "well known Warren resident and father of Sgt. John Heinlein of the city police department." It named his sons Joe and John of Warren and Charles of Huntington, his daughters Mrs. Maggie Clegg of Warren and Mrs. Bertha Smith and Mrs. Cecile Lahr of Huntington, his sister Mrs. Anna Whistler and brother Will, both of Ada, and ten grandchildren. His body lay at the W. J. White funeral home and was shipped to Huntington. He is buried beside Hannah in Beech Grove Cemetery.
