Jewell Norene Josey
Jewell Norene Josey was born in Washington County, Georgia, on 9 July 1907. She was one of the nine children of Henry Lewis Josey, a planter near Bartow, and Belle Smith. In 1913, when she was five, her parents took the leading part in organizing the Josey Baptist Church.
About 1923 she married Kendrick Marvin Smith, also of Washington County. Their daughters Lora and Eunice were born in Georgia, and about 1929 the family moved to Bath, a mill village in Aiken County, South Carolina, where Kendrick worked for the mill. Four sons followed. The third, Gerald, died in 1945 at six.
Jewell was a homemaker and a member of Bath First Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Women's Missionary Union. When her father died in 1939 his obituary listed her as "Mrs. Jewel Smith." When her mother died in 1952 she was "Mrs. K. M. Smith of Bath, S.C." Kendrick died in 1965, and she lived on in Bath for twenty-seven years.
Jewell Josey Smith died on Monday, 10 February 1992, at the Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center in Aiken, aged 84. The funeral was held at Hatcher Funeral Home in Langley, with Rev. Gene Jennings and Rev. Vina Mae Josey officiating, and she was buried beside Kendrick in Langley Cemetery. She left two daughters, three sons, eighteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Her grandsons and great-grandsons carried her.
