Hugh Lawson White Raulston was born in 1833 in Marion County, Tennessee, near Jasper. He was named in full for Hugh Lawson White, the Tennessee judge and United States senator who ran for president in 1836. Family memorials name his parents as Robert Simmons Roulston and Margaret E. Bryson. The family wrote its name both ways, Roulston and Raulston, and the census taker of 1860 used Roulston.

On 30 July 1860 the census taker for the 11th District of Marion County, whose post office was Jasper, found Hugh living under his father's roof. Robert S. Roulston, 54, was a farmer with land worth $9,000 and personal property worth $3,580. Hugh, 27, was also a farmer and owned land of his own worth $700. With them were Hugh's brother James B., 21, and his sister Louisa, 12. Hugh's wife Sarah, 24, had been born in Alabama. Their four children were all at home: Robert S., 6, Bryce, 4, Laura E., 3, and Matilda, four months old. His mother had died the summer before, on 13 August 1859.

His father went on to serve three terms in the Tennessee General Assembly for Marion County. He died at Nashville on 31 October 1867, during the third of them.

Hugh and Sarah raised eleven children. After Robert, Bryce, Laura and Matilda came Nancy Scott, called Nannie, in 1862, Frankie in 1864, William Jefferson, called Jeff, in 1866, Joseph Lancaster in 1868, Horace Wade in 1871, Arthur John in 1872 and Sarah Louise in 1875. Their eldest son Robert S. Raulston farmed at Ketchall in Marion County and married Ellen D. Cluck in 1877.

Hugh's gravestone in the Raulston Cemetery, as it has been transcribed, calls him "Col. U. S. Army (Union - 1861-1865" and a "State Senator 1883-1885". In other words he served as a colonel on the Union side through the whole of the Civil War, and twenty years later sat in the Tennessee Senate. The regiment is not named on the stone.

Hugh Lawson White Raulston died in 1902, aged about 69. He is buried in the Raulston Cemetery in Marion County. Sarah outlived him by eleven years and was buried in the same ground.
