Robert S. Raulston

Robert S. Raulston was born on 28 July 1853 near Jasper, Marion County, Tennessee. He was the eldest of the eleven children of Hugh Lawson White Raulston and Sarah Wynne. In July 1860, when he was 6, the census taker found him in the 11th District of Marion County, living with his parents, his younger brother Bryce, his sisters Laura and Matilda, and his grandfather Robert S. Roulston, a farmer with land worth $9,000. He was named for that grandfather. His father went on to serve as a colonel on the Union side through the Civil War, by his gravestone.

In 1877 he married Ellen D. "Ella" Cluck, the daughter of Andrew Jackson Cluck, a Confederate cavalryman who also farmed in the 11th District. Their children were Van Wyrick Raulston (1877 to 1933), Fannie Ann Raulston, later Kelly (1879 to 1966), Walter William Raulston (1880 to 1957), and Ellen Texas Raulston (1892 to 1964), who married George William Cleveland Walker. In the census of 1880 Robert, 26, and Ellen D. were at home with V. W. and Fannie A. Ella died in July 1892, months after Ellen Texas was born. In 1893 Robert married Nora Bell Parker (1873 to 1934). In 1910 he and Nora B. were living in Civil District 4 of Marion County.

Robert was a farmer. He died on 8 November 1928, aged 75, at his home in Ketchall, a Marion County settlement that no longer exists. He is buried in the Raulston Cemetery in Marion County.
