Jan Tummers

Baptised at the Pancratius church in Munstergeleen on 1 March 1751, the son of Hindricus Tummers and Anna Vrolings, and entered as the twin of a brother named Gobbel who was christened the same morning in an entry of his own. Two more children followed, Gabriel in 1754 and Maria Gertrudis in 1757. He married Maria Barbara Carduck, a woman of the Carduc family of Beek, and the baptism of their eldest known child in 1783 notes beside her name that the pair had been married at Schinnen.

Five of their children are recorded at Munstergeleen between 1783 and 1794: Anna Gertrudis, Jan Peter, Maria Ida, Cornelius and Maria Anna. The godparents at those christenings are almost all Carducks, his wife's brother Gerardus at the first and her sister Maria Ida at the third, so the wife's family stayed close through the whole of the marriage.

He died at Munstergeleen on 9 February 1812, aged sixty-one, and the civil death act drawn up under the French system names his parents and gives his wife as Barb Cardonk, one clerk's attempt at a name that no two of them ever spelled alike. She outlived him by twenty-three years. When their daughter Maria Ida married three years after his death, and again when she died in 1860, he was named as her father, so his name survives in records made forty-eight years apart.
