Jane Haburne

Jane Haburne, baptized at Cottingham in the East Riding of Yorkshire on 10 October 1602, the fourth child of Ralph Haburne and his wife Maud, whom the register calls Matilda at her marriage and Magdalena at her burial. Her father's family had been in the parish since at least 1564 and her grandfather John Haburne was buried there in 1597.

She married Thomas Grant in Cottingham church on 21 September 1624, three years after her elder sister Anna married John Gouldsborough there and five years before her younger sister Isabella married Francis Gouldswell in the same building. Her first child, a Jane, was christened in March 1625/6 and buried four days later. Five more followed at Cottingham: John, George, Hannah in October 1631, Frances and Anna.

The years around her first children were the worst the family had. Her eldest brother George was buried in February 1622/3, his infant daughter the day after, and her mother that May. Her father remarried in 1625 and was buried in April 1633.

Her daughter Hannah married Edward Hazen at Rowley in Massachusetts in March 1650, and Jane went to Rowley too: she is on record there as the wife of Thomas Grant.
