Jeremiah Wilmon Long
Jeremiah Wilmon Long was born at Watertown, Massachusetts, on 6 September 1905, the son of Edward J. Long, a native of Bangor, Maine, and Lida Swazey Patten. He grew up in Watertown with his brother John Philip and his sister Julia Joanna; the family is there in the censuses of 1910 and 1920. His name was his uncle's: his father's eldest brother, Jeremiah Long, a candy maker born at Bangor in 1867, had died at Peabody the year before he was born. His mother's people were the Pattens of Bucksport, Maine. His father died in 1927.
He married Mary C. Grabowski, who was born on 17 December 1907. By 1935 they were settled in the house at 12 Irma Avenue, Watertown, and the 1940 census found them there: Jeremiah, 34, Mary, 31, Barbara D., 11, and Gerald P., 5. In the spring of 1953 their daughter Barbara married Edwin P. Varley of Winthrop at Sacred Heart Church, Watertown. The Winthrop Transcript described the reception at the Hotel Beaconsfield, where "the mother of the bride wore a dress of turquoise silk shantung with navy and white accessories and an orchid corsage."
Jeremiah died at Cambridge on 12 April 1983, aged 77. He is buried at Ridgelawn Cemetery, Watertown, in Section F, Lot 478, under a granite stone carved with a cross and flowers: "LONG / 1905 JEREMIAH W 1983 / 1907 MARY C 1996".
