Eunice L. Smith
Eunice L. Smith was born on 11 October 1926 at Bartow, Georgia, a small railroad town in Jefferson County. Her parents were Kendrick M. Smith and Jewell Josey Smith, both natives of Washington County, Georgia. When she was about three the family moved to Bath, a cotton mill village in the Horse Creek Valley of Aiken County, South Carolina. Her father worked for the mill and retired from United Merchants, the company that ran it.
Eunice went into the same mill. She retired from United Merchants with forty-six years of service. A woman who had known her at the mill remembered her there: "I would walk by her set of looms in Bath Mill and she was always pleasant to speak to."
On 8 April 1949 she married Stanley Shirley Quackenbush, a Vermont-born man who had come south. Their daughter Shirley Louise was born at Augusta, Georgia, on 25 January 1950. Six more children are named in her obituary: Janet, Rhetta, Adelbert M., called Bo, Randy, Mark and Stanley Jr. In 1965 the family lived at Langley, the next mill village down the valley from Bath.
Stanley died in December 1986. Eunice lived on for thirty years. She belonged to Bath First Baptist Church and to its Joy Group. In September 2002 she buried her eldest daughter, Shirley Q. Frye, who was 52. She also outlived three of her brothers, Kenneth, Jimmy and Floyd, and two great-grandchildren, Ian Shealy and Andrea "Andy" Deas.
Eunice L. Quackenbush died on Monday, 13 February 2017, aged 90. Her funeral was held at Bath First Baptist Church, with Pastor Herb Sons officiating, and she lay in the church for an hour beforehand. She was buried beside Stanley in Langley Cemetery. Her pallbearers were grandsons and other kin: Jimmy Sanford, Larry Jr., Kevin and Kenneth Gregory, Ryan Quackenbush and Brandon Cobb. Her great-grandchildren were honorary pallbearers. She left six children, eleven grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, along with her sister Lora E. Carnell of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, her brother Barry W. Smith of Bath, and a lifelong friend, Dot Posey.
