Johann Hoppe
Johann Hoppe was born at Warstein, in the Sauerland country of Westphalia, and baptized at St. Pankratius on 11 February 1781 as Johann Peter Heinrich Mathias, son of Johann Wilhelm Hoppe and Elisabeth Spanke. His godparents were Johann Peter Strake and Theresia Pilsticker, and Heinrich Spanke stood as witness. His parents had married in the same church the summer before. A brother, Johann Wilhelm Clemens, followed in 1784.
On 23 November 1802 he married Elisabeth Müller, the clerk writing her Elisabetha Mullen, with Anton Henke and Peter Gerke as witnesses. He was twenty-one and she was seventeen. Their daughter Anna Maria Theresia Antonetta was born and baptized on 11 October 1803. Her godmother was Elisabetha Schumacher, and Johann Heinrich Knulle, Theresia Spanke and Jakob Piepen stood by. Twenty-three years later Theresia married Johann Caspar Wilhelm Hercules in the same church, and by 1843 the couple were in St. Louis.
Johann stayed in Warstein. A later hand beside his marriage entry gives his death as 13 May 1851. His wife outlived him by twelve years and died in February 1863, recorded as his widow.
Hoppe was a settled Warstein name, baptized in the parish from the 1750s on. A Josephina Hoppe, born about 1783, married Wilhelm Anton Bergenthal at Warstein in 1804 and died there in 1848; she is of an age to be Johann's sister, and no record ties them.
