John Hale
John Hale was the only son of Darcy Hale of the city of Dublin and his wife Sarah, who was the daughter and heir of Anthony Clopton. That descent is given on his son-in-law's monument at Lewisham, set up in 1834.
He settled at Kidwelly in Carmarthenshire, and by 1793 he also kept a house at Phillimore Place in Kensington. He married a woman named Mary Ann, whose maiden name has not been found. Their children included a son, John Monckton Hale, and a daughter, Anna Maria, who married the mathematician Thomas Myers in 1807. John Monckton Hale married Isabella Gale at Kensington on 4 June 1793 and became a London merchant.
He died early in 1799. A Find a Grave index entry gives the date as 10 February 1799 and his birth as 18 September 1737. He was buried at Kidwelly on 19 February. The Gentleman's Magazine listed him that month among recent deaths as "John Hale, esq. of Kidwelly, in Carmarthenshire." His wall tablet in St Mary's church, Kidwelly, is signed "J. M.", the work of the sculptor John Maliphant.
