John Hendry Sr.
John Hendry was born on 1 December 1778 in New Hanover County, North Carolina, the eldest child of Robert Hendry, an immigrant from the Isle of Arran in Scotland, and Ann Lee. His brothers and sisters were Neal, William, James, Robert Jr., George, Archibald, Elizabeth Ann and Mary.
The family moved to Georgia about 1796 and lived in Burke County. In 1801 they settled at Taylors Creek, in the western part of Liberty County. On 13 December 1808, in Liberty County, John married Catherine McFail, born in 1789 in the Barnwell District of South Carolina. She was a daughter of James McFail, a Revolutionary soldier, and his wife Judith. A year earlier John's brother William had married Catherine's older sister Nancy.
By trade John was a carpenter. He held land in Morgan County, Georgia, and on 9 December 1816, describing himself as "John Hendry of Liberty County, carpenter," he sold 202 1/2 acres there to Richard Smith for $575. In the War of 1812 he served as a private in Capt. Robert Quarterman's company of the 2nd Regiment of Georgia Militia, from 18 January to 13 February 1815.
About 1825 John and Catherine moved inland to Lowndes County, Georgia, in what is now Brooks County. They went with his brother William and his family and with Catherine's widowed mother, Judith McFail. On 16 June 1826 John bought 200 acres of lot 515 in the 12th District from the Rev. Melus Thigpen. He was a second lieutenant of the militia in the 790th District from 1832 to 1835. In 1842 he sold the home place to Abraham Hargraves for $1,785. In the 1850 census John, aged 72, and Catherine, aged 61, were living in Lowndes County.
Later they moved to Jennings, in Hamilton County, Florida, where their son Robert had settled in 1848. John was remembered as a pioneer settler of the Jasper country. He died at Jennings in December 1858 and was buried in the Hendry Cemetery, three or four miles from the town. His son John Jr. administered the estate.
John and Catherine had nine children: John Jr., James Norton, Robert, Judith, Archibald, William McFail, Charles Wesley, Andrew Jackson and George Washington. Catherine lived another thirty years and died at Fort Green, Florida, in 1889.
