Robert Hendry
Robert Hendry was born on 4 March 1815 in Liberty County, Georgia, a son of John Hendry Sr. and Catherine McFail. About 1825 his parents moved the family inland to Lowndes County, Georgia, with his uncle William Hendry and his grandmother Judith McFail. His brothers were John Jr., James Norton, Archibald, William McFail, Charles Wesley, Andrew Jackson and George Washington, and his sister was Judith.
On 12 April 1835 he married Zilla Ann Moody at the Taylors Creek Methodist Church in Liberty County. The Rev. John B. Glenn officiated, and the witnesses were Enoch Daniel, Ben Darsey and Hugh Williams. Hugh Williams was married to Zilla's aunt.
In 1848 the Hendrys moved to Florida, settling a few miles from Jasper in Hamilton County. The 1850 census found them there with three sons, John W., William F. and James M., Robert's brother Archibald, and a 69-year-old North Carolina woman, Barbara Herrin. Their son William Francis drowned in the Alapaha River about 1855, and their daughter Amanda died about 1857. In 1860 Robert was a farmer at Jasper with real estate worth $2,000 and personal property worth $3,535.
On 3 December 1861 Robert sold his property for $2,100. Probably that same month he moved the family south to Fort Green, in Manatee County, now Hardee County. On 1 January 1862 he bought half of a quarter section there from James D. Green, the man Fort Green was named for. The family homesteaded on Payne's Creek, farming and raising stock. They were Methodists and went to the camp meetings at Fort Meade.
Smallpox reached the settlement the next winter. Zilla Ann died on 16 January 1863, and Robert followed on 3 February 1863, aged forty-seven. He was buried at Fort Green Baptist Church, in what is now Hardee County. His headstone carries the three linked rings of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal society. Beneath his dates is a worn epitaph that begins: "Living he made the poor man's heart be glad." The front of the same stone also records his mother: "Catherine McFail Hendry born 1789, died 1889, married 1808, John Hendry."
His estate was inventoried in Manatee County at $8,428.23. His eldest son, John Wright Hendry, administered it. The children were John Wright, William Francis, James Madison called Boss, Ellen Catherine, Amanda, Charles F. and Robert Calvin called Cab. Cab, the youngest, was thirteen.
