John Lindaberry
John Lindaberry, also written Lindabury, Lindabery and Linaberry, was born on 5 March 1784 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, a son of Henry Lindaberry, who held lot No. 3 among the early farms of German Valley. The family had come from Germany as Leinenberger, and when his father died in 1809 the clerk still wrote the name Linaberger. John and his brother Jacob were the administrators of their father's estate that September.
He married Betsey Rodenbaugh, a daughter of John Rodenbaugh, on 8 November 1812 by a family tree. A genealogy of the region's German families, published in 1895, names four of their children: Eliza, who married Frederick Terryberry; Susan, who married William Fritts; Lydia, who married Charles Carhart; and Sherwood, a doctor, who married Ellen Robeson and lived at Bloomsbury. A family tree adds Katherine, Mary Jane, Amanda Ann and Nathan, who died in 1823 at about two. His brothers included Conrad of Pleasant Grove, Jacob, Harbert, Caspar of Cokesburg and George H. of Fairmount.
Betsey died on 11 March 1851, and he outlived her by twelve years. In the summer of 1860 the census found him, aged 76 and a widower, living in Washington township, Morris County, in the household of his daughter Susan and her husband William D. Fritts, with their eight children and Sophia Bowman, aged 88. He died on 3 May 1863, aged 79, and was buried beside her in the churchyard of the Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church, in Washington township, Morris County, a few miles north of the German Valley farms where his father had settled. His stone, a small marker now sunk almost level with the ground, reads "John Lindabery."
