John McLurg
John McLurg was born on 13 March 1826 and was, in the words of his gravestone, a "native of Belfast, Ireland". He married Isabella Marshall, who was also Irish born, and the couple came to Upper Canada, the province that became Ontario. They settled in Middlesex County, around London Township and East Williams, west and north of the town of London.
Their children were born in Ontario. William came about 1849 or 1850. Henry was born on 18 August 1853 in London Township. John was born on 25 July 1857 at London and became a physician. Letitia came about 1858, Mary about 1860 and Arthur about 1862. Every one of these children whose marriage or death was registered in Ontario was entered as a child of John McLurg and Isabella Marshall.
John McLurg died on 20 June 1886, aged sixty, and was buried in the cemetery at Carlisle, Middlesex County. His family raised a tall polished granite obelisk over him. His face of it reads: "JOHN McLURG / NATIVE OF BELFAST / IRELAND / BORN MAR 13 1826 / DIED JUNE 20 1886", with the verse "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" and a farewell: "Farewell my wife and children all, from you a father Christ doth call. Mourn not for me, it is in vain to call me to your sight again."
