John Webster
John Webster was born about 1510, a son of John Webster of Syston and Cossington in Leicestershire and his wife Emett Welle. His father died before 1558. His mother made her will that August and left the residue of her goods to "her son John," with two beds and a half share of a mattress and bedding. She made him one of her executors.
He carried out her wishes. On 30 August 1558 the Cossington churchwardens received "of John Webster that hys Mother Emott Webster gave to the upholding of the church of Cossington the same sume yerely to be given," twenty pence a year.
He did errands for the town. About 1560 the churchwardens paid "John Webster for carying the wheat to Stammford," two shillings. Stamford was the market town some thirty miles east. They also repaid him eightpence he had laid out for the town's weights. "Goodwyfe Webster" did the church washing. In the subsidy of 1572 he was taxed six shillings and eightpence.
He was buried at Cossington on 24 June 1575. His son William, called "s. and heir of John Webster," had been buried two years before, and another son, John, born about 1535, carried on the farm.
