Joseph Daris House was born on 15 November 1833. His daughter Lula's death certificate of 1956 names him as her father, Joseph House.

He was born in Mississippi. In the census of 17 October 1850 Joseph D. House was 17, a farm boy living in Milam County in the household of Elisha McDonald, 36, and his wife Rebecca, 42. Two other Houses lived there with him: John W. House, 19, also born in Mississippi, and Sarah A. House, 11, born in Texas. Sarah's birthplace shows the family had reached Texas by about 1839. The census does not say how the three were related to the McDonalds. Their father was John House, who was dead by then. In December 1852 John W. House, "for himself and guardian for the minor heirs of John House dec'd," joined the other heirs at law of W. W. Lewis of Milam County in releasing 107 acres to Joel Lewis. Joseph was nineteen that year, still under age, and already the owner of land of his own: a Lewis deed of that year called for a corner of John W. House's and Joseph D. House's lands. The Rebecca of the 1850 household had married Elisha McDonald in neighboring Brazos County in the 1840s as Rebecca House. She was very likely John House's widow, and perhaps the children's mother, but no record of the time says so. Joseph later named his eldest son John Wesley.

He married Martha Zellner, a daughter of Francis Edward Zellner and Sirena Myers, who had come to Milam County in 1846. Martha was sixteen years younger than Joseph. Their children were Olivia Elizabeth, who married a Blacklock, John Wesley House, Lula, born in January 1875, Joseph House, Imogene and George Zellner House. Lula married the carpenter Jesse Bryant Nisbett.

The family lived in Milam County, near Cameron. Joseph died on 2 May 1902, aged 68, and was buried in the Salem-Wilson Cemetery near Cameron. Martha lived on as his widow for thirty years and was buried beside him under one stone, carved HOUSE across the top.
