Zerviah Webster
Zerviah Webster was born on 29 August 1740 at Hebron in Connecticut, in the Gilead Society on the Bolton side of the town. She was the eighth of the thirteen children of Thomas Webster and Lydia Lyman. The family book spells her Zeruah, Zuriah, Zavia, Ziviah and Saviah, and says she was "often called 'Viah' for short." When she was about eleven, the new town of Bolton was set off and the line left her father's house in Hebron. He bought the next plot and moved the house over into Bolton.
On 17 November 1762 she married Joseph Cobb of Bolton. A daughter, Hope, was born at Bolton on 4 June 1764, and a son, Joseph, on 15 March 1766. The boy died on 13 June 1767, aged fifteen months. The family book gives her husband's death as 10 August 1767 "or 1771," "probably in the 31st year of his age." On 15 August 1767, as "Zurviah Cobb," she deeded land in Bolton to her brother Joseph Webster. That deed, and her second marriage in April 1771, both point to 1767.
On 2 April 1771 she married Joseph Sutliffe Jr. The Webster genealogy calls him "Joseph Sutliff, or Sutlief, of Bolton," and says the couple "soon after removed to Wolcott." The Sutliffe genealogies, which have his family at Wolcott by 1765, enter the marriage there and her as "Zerviah Webster, widow of Cobb, of Bolton, Conn." Wolcott lay sixty miles to the west, across the Connecticut river and most of the colony.
She bore six Sutliffe children at Wolcott in eleven years. Zerviah came in January 1772 and gave her own name to the eldest. Joseph, born on 27 December 1773, was the second child baptised in the new parish. Michael was born in 1775 or 1776, Lydia on 1 February 1778, Abiathar on 7 May 1780 and Nathan in 1782.
The children scattered. Her daughter Hope Cobb went to Smyrna in New York and died there, and so did her son Nathan. Zerviah married Benjamin Hickox and died at Waterbury. Lydia married a Beach. Joseph went to Bethel in Sullivan County, New York, and then to Damascus in Pennsylvania. Abiathar went west and was killed by the fall of a tree. Michael "died on the ocean Sept. 10, 1799, in the 24th year of his age, returning from West Indies."
Her husband died at Wolcott on 11 November 1801, aged sixty seven, by the Webster genealogy; the Sutliffe genealogies give 1 October 1795. Her father died at Bolton in December 1802, aged ninety nine by his headstone. She died at Wolcott on 20 April 1819, aged seventy eight.
