Joyce Virginia Kuehl
Joyce Virginia Kuehl was born at Freeport, Illinois, on 29 May 1918. Her father, Frank Kuehl, was born in Germany and had come to America in 1895. Her mother, Mildred I. Daughenbaugh, was born in Illinois.
In January 1920 Joyce was one year and eight months old, living in the ninth precinct of Freeport. Her father was thirty-four and her mother twenty-six. The house was full of boys: Leroy was nine, Albert seven, Kenneth five and William three. Her sister Tiny was five months old. Tiny Mae died in 1921, and another sister, Genevieve, was born that year. A brother, Ralph, called Mike, came in 1924.
Her parents did not stay together. Her mother married Ralph Lloyd Penticoff and had five more children between 1927 and 1938, Joyce's half brothers and sisters. Her father married again too.
In October 1937, at nineteen, Joyce applied for a Social Security number at Freeport. She married George Clifford Ryan, a Freeport man two years younger. Their daughter Corrine J. Ryan was born on 16 December 1942, and a son, Jim, followed.
George died in February 1967, at forty-six, four months after Corrine's wedding to Ronald Pannkuk. Joyce lived another twenty-two years as his widow. She died at Freeport on 12 August 1989, aged seventy-one, and was buried beside him in the Garden of Devotion at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. They share one bronze plaque, marked "Together Forever".
