Laun Hinkle
Laun Elen Hinkle Jr. was born on 12 June 1935 at Silver Creek, a village in Merrick County, Nebraska. He was the son of Laun E. Hinkle and Helen Eva Staniec, who had married at Columbus in 1930. His middle name came from his grandfather, Elen Eli Hinkle, who was living in the same house.
In the census of 1940 he was four years old. The household stood in Silver Creek village: his father Laun, 37, his mother Helen, 31, and his grandfather Eli Hinkle, 84, a widower who had come up from Kansas with his family in 1917. The family had lived in that same house in 1935. Ten years later, in April 1950, the census again found him at home with his parents in Silver Creek Township.
His mother's side was Polish. Her parents, Bartley Staniec and Julia Marfica, had both been born in Poland and farmed in Nance and Merrick counties. When Bartley died in 1948, Laun was thirteen, one of the thirty grandchildren the obituary counted.
He married Virginia Sue Dilley, called Ginny, a girl from Red Oak, Iowa, whose family was living at Columbus by 1950. They married on 13 February at Columbus; the year is not known. Their children were Liz, who married Chip Diggs, Julie, who married a Hamblin, Laun III, Steve and Larry.
Laun worked as a firefighter. By 1989 he was living in Kansas City, Missouri. Ginny died on 18 July 2000.
Laun died on 29 August 2007 at Wellsville, in Franklin County, Kansas. He was seventy two. Obituaries ran in the Columbus Telegram and the Fremont Tribune on 31 August 2007. His mother Helen, then ninety eight and living at Fremont, outlived him by four months.
